Hawke and Adderley Street Park, West Melbourne

Option1: New park without using Hawke Street

This image shows the total area of the new proposed Hawke and Adderley Street Park on the corner of Hawke and Adderley Street Park in West Melbourne. The new park includes the existing park and 104 Hawke Street, a property purchased by Council on the park’s south-west boundary. The new total park area will be approximately 1,073 square metres.

Below the main image is a cross section view of the park and Hawke Street from the northwest to the southeast and through approximately the centre of the park. The park is 19m across to the existing park fence line. The street includes:

  • Footpath 3.3m

  • Existing parallel parking 2.4m

  • North bound traffic lane 6.2m

  • Median and existing 90° parking 5.2m

  • South bound traffic lane 6.2m

  • Existing parallel parking 2.4m

  • Footpath

The road conditions including parking are existing and unchanged. There is two way traffic flow long Hawke Street separated by a median with tree islands and parallel parking.

Option2: New park including a portion of Hawke Street

This image shows the total area of the new proposed Hawke and Adderley Street Park on the corner of Hawke and Adderley Street Park in West Melbourne. The new park includes the existing park, 104 Hawke Street, a property purchased by Council on the park’s south-west boundary, and a 40m portion of Hawke Street along the south-east boundary of the existing park and 104 Hawke Street. The new total park area will be approximately 1,813 square metres.

Below the main image is a cross section view of the park and Hawke Street from the northwest to the southeast and through approximately the centre of the park. The park is 36m across to the park edge. The footpath is on the edge of the park and the new portion of park will have an existing footpath fall of 1:10 from where the existing park fence line currently is. The proposed two-way street includes:

  • North bound traffic lane 4.5m

  • South bound traffic lane 4.5m

  • Footpath is then from kerb to existing building line

Although the kerb will now extend southeast into Hawke Street two way traffic flow long Hawke Street will be maintained. Expected loss of car parking spaces = approximately 17. Expected open space gained through park expansion into Hawke Street = approximately 740 square metres.

Hawke and Adderley Street Park Expansion: Ideas Plan

The image for the Ideas Plan shows the park expanded into a portion of Hawke Street as proposed in Option 2. There is a Plaza Zone to the west from Madden Lane. This connects to neighbouring Adderley Street properties and the two abutting zones: the open lawn to the northeast which extends to Adderley Street and the playful landscape to the southeast which encompasses 104 Hawke Street. The Social Hub is a linear area that edges the park between the open lawn and Hawke Street up to Adderley Street.

An arrow pointing north from Adderley Street indicates *A new Dog off –leash area will be provided approximately 400m away in the West Melbourne Park Expansion in 2016.

Background

Hawke and Adderley Street Park is a small local open space. It currently contains lawns, paths, garden beds and a toddler playground.

The City of Melbourne Open Space Strategy has identified the need to improve provision, accessibility and diversity of open space for existing and future populations in West Melbourne.

An open space precinct planning approach has been taken to inform any new park development opportunities. The ideas plan was developed using local demographic, open space planning and existing park usage information.

Park Design

Taking advantage of the site topography, the enlargement of Hawke and Adderley Street Park offers opportunities for a diversity of informal and community use.

The new small local park will be open, inviting and accessible. It will improve biodiversity and bring people together. The overall function of this space is divided into four key zones:

  • Open Lawn

  • Plaza Zone

  • Social Hub

  • Playful Landscape

Playful Landscape

The image for this zone shows two children sliding down a slide in a nature based play area.

This new larger play space will cater for preschool aged children up to 5 years. While some formal equipment maybe provided, the focus will also be on nature play to support social, cognitive and physical development.

Social Hub

The image for this zone shows a young man at a picnic table using a laptop.

The Hawke and Adderley Street corner is framed by the Social Hub. This is a space for eating lunch, studying, or informal group gatherings.

Open Lawn

The image for this zone shows a few people relaxing on a green open grassed area.

The sunny open lawn is a flexible functional green space. Potential uses include relaxing, reading, enjoying sunlight, informal recreational activities and socialising.

Plaza Zone

The image for this zone shows an aerial perspective of a granitic gravel plaza area with people walking through it and a large open canopied tree in the middle. Some raised green grassed area is to the north.

The plaza zone has been safely located as a key circulation area between two zones. It also retains existing access for neighbouring properties. The plaza is characterised by a number of edges where you can sit relax and overlook the play area.
