The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will be recruiting to fill a Job Corps Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer (JCFAFMO), Supervisory Forestry Technician, GS-0462-8/9, position. This position is an FS-FPM position and must meet the IQCS minimum core and secondary requirements to be considered. The core requirement is Crew Boss and the secondary requirement is Incident Commander Type 4. Title: Job Corps Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer

Tour of Duty: Permanent Full Time
Housing: Government quarters are not available.
This is a standard wildland fire management position description intended for use in the USDA Forest Service. The incumbent serves as a Job Corps Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer (JCFAFMO) assigned as a liaison between a Job Corps Center and the host national forest. This position reports to the Forest Fire Management Officer on the host forest, but will interact closely with the Columbia Basin and Fort Simcoe Job Corps Center Managers and staff. The primary purpose of this position is to provide operational oversight and preparedness planning, hazardous fuels reduction and planning, and training for the Job Corps personnel (students and staff) to actively support the wildland fire mission of the Forest Service.
The incumbent may be required to possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL). If a CDL is required, the position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. The Incumbent will be required to submit a urinalysis specimen at a designated medical facility, to screen for illegal drug use. These screenings are required prior to appointment and on a random basis post appointment.
This is a secondary firefighter position under 5 USC 8336(c) (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS). Ninety (90) days of experience as a primary/rigorous firefighter or equivalent experience outside federal employment is a basic qualification requirement for this position.
This position is subject to medical monitoring program.
WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a ''condition of employment.''
Local/Community Area

The Forest: The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is a large and diverse area, encompassing over 4-million acres along the east slopes of the Cascade Range in Washington. Vegetation varies from grasslands and sage brush to Ponderosa Pine and Douglas-fir with alpine fir in the higher elevations. Nearly 40% of the Wenatchee’s forest land in designated as wilderness area.

Recreation: Recreational opportunities abound in the area. There are three major ski areas within 60 minutes of Wenatchee as well as several small local ski areas. There are various Cross Country ski trails and opportunities for heli-skiing. The forests trail and road systems allow for snowmobiling, horseback riding, mountain biking, trail bike riding and snowshoeing. Wildlife habitat provides a wide array of hunting opportunities from elk, deer and bear to pheasant, chukkar and grouse. Streams, ponds, rivers and lakes harbor several varieties of trout and furnish water sport enthusiasts a fanfare of ventures. Whether it’s scenic vistas, para-gliding, rock climbing, kayaking or camping activities you enjoy, the Okanogan- Wenatchee provides abundant opportunities.

The Community: The Wenatchee Valley is nestled on the shores of the Columbia River. It is located in Central Washington just 100 miles southeast of Seattle and 165 miles west of Spokane. The Greater Wenatchee Area has approximately 48,000 residents who enjoy living in a region with four distinct seasons. Education: The community’s higher education needs are met by Wenatchee Valley College, a comprehensive community college featuring two-year degree programs and transfer programs in conjunction with state four-year institutions including Eastern Washington University, Central Washington University and Washington State University. The Wenatchee and Eastmont school districts serve 9,000 students in 11 elementary schools, two special education schools, four middle and junior high schools, an alternative high school, and two senior high schools. In addition to public education, three private religious schools, a Head Start program, and numerous pre-schools and kindergartens serve the area.

Health Care: Central Washington Hospital, located in Wenatchee, is the major health care facility in the region. Services include inpatient and outpatient surgery, cardiac program, coronary and intensive care, respiratory care, oncology, dialysis, neonatal nursery, home health and hospice, regional trauma emergency department, skilled nursing and rehabilitative services. Over 60 dentists, hygienists, orthodontists, and dental laboratories serve the Wenatchee area. Wenatchee also has a life flight helicopter stationed at Central Washington Hospital and Executive Flight possesses three jet air ambulances stationed at Pangborn Airport in East Wenatchee.

Columbia Basin Job Corps is located approximately 5 miles from downtown Moses Lake in Grant County Washington. Moses Lake is located in the center of the state with easy access to I-90 the major freeway running east and west. Moses Lake is only 105 miles from Spokane and 175 miles from Seattle. The Center:

Columbia Basin Job Corps Center houses 300 co-ed students in a 7-day a week, 24-hour a day residential program. The Center trains young people from the ages of 16-24 in vocational skills, educational goals and social development. The Center offers eleven vocational trades, high school diploma, GEDs, transfers to advanced training, college and Armed Forces. The Center has a recreational program that meets the needs of the students. The Center functions similar to a small community college campus with dormitory living. There are approximately 80 full time employees working on the center.

Fort Simcoe Job Corps is located in White Swan, Washington approximately 30 miles from Yakima, Washington in Yakima County. The Center:

Fort Simcoe Job Corps Center trains young people from the ages of 16-24 in vocational skills, educational goals and social development. The Center can house approximately 200 students. The Center provides academic training to help students transition into the workplace and achieve their full potential. The center also provides career technical training in several vocational trades. Fort Simcoe boasts one of the best recreation programs in the nation.
