Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:
-
Identify common problems of the upper quarter based on clinical examination of the associated structures
-
Identify patients suitable for manual therapy (mobilization/manipulation) of the spine and shoulder.
-
Identify patients where manual therapy would be contraindicated.
-
Demonstrate safe and effective soft tissue mobilization of the spine and shoulder.
-
Identify the need for applying rigid tape following manual therapy intervention.
This is an 8-hour intermediate level, lecture, demonstration/hands-on course for therapists with 1 or more years of experience in orthopedic manual therapy. Skills to be developed include examination of all shoulder articulations, thoracic outlet, screening for cervical spine problems, and manual therapy for problems of the upper quarter. Selective use of rigid taping following manual therapy intervention will be demonstrated.
Using a combination of lecture, demonstration and supervised hands-on lab (the course is being held in a clinical setting with examination and treatment tables) participants can expect practical instruction in examination and treatment of the upper quarter. Lectures will include evidenced based information, including reliability and validity of examination techniques, and safety and efficacy of manual therapy techniques. Participants can expect to learn clinically applicable skills that can be used “the next day” in their respective jobs.
