SHARING THE GERMAN EXPERIENCE OF DIGITALIZATION

It was in Germany that in 2011 one of the key slogans of digitalization was coined: 
“Industry 4.0”. 
What is the status of digitalization in Germany now in 2020? What lessons can be 
learnt from the German experience. 
For this Dr. Franziska Frank, Affiliate Program Director at ESMT Berlin, with 
whom the Graduate School of Business and Entrepreneurship has been cooperating 
since 2015, will give a short overview over what research and practice has to say. 
Another key for the successful digitalization is the mindset 
Like everywhere in the world German companies are partly mastering the process 
of digitization successfully along the 5 different levels. On the other hand, there are 
still considerable challenges ahead. 
Where this succeeds, companies manage to motivate and take their employees 
along and perform successfully. 
New Work requires a different approach to Leadership - 
the virtue of “humility” 
is one element of this.

Many steps still need to be taken 
–
the danger is in believing that one has already 
arrived, that one or two levels of digitization are enough and that all are already on 
board. 
The implementation of digitization is not successful in every case 
There is a beginning shift in leadership for the digital age: 
“I answer my own phone and many customers have not only my e
-mail address, 
but also my mobile number.“

If you don’t insist on your titl
es, positions or seniority, you can learn a lot as a 
manager. Informal channels also open up. The manager learns things that he or she 
would not learn if people felt that they were judging everything.

The key is humility as a leadership virtue: 

Recognize your own strengths and weaknesses

Openly appreciating the contributions and strengths of others 

Be open and willing to learn 

Understand that you are only a small part of a larger whole 
But there is still a long way to go for Germany

as seen by the Germans 
themselves…
