Innovation is rarely a light bulb moment and a flash of inspiration, especially
when innovation in industry, academia and government at a national level is concerned.
If we consider the Medici Effect, where a confluence of disparate disciplines are
brought together to create a fertile ground for innovation, then a structured approach
can be deployed to support innovative thought and developments in industry, academia
and government. And with the right structures in place innovation can be encouraged
in certain areas.
The UK government has used this theoretical framework to develop policies,
government agencies, funding streams and delivery bodies and much more to support
the UK’s innovation economy in a way that encourages innovation in certain areas to
support economic development in certain areas of the economy to ensure the right skills
are developed, companies are grown and research occurs. This is not an exact science,
but when taken at a national level, if the right processes and structures are put in place,
the chances are maximised. And then it is not a case of how much money is spent on
it, but how wisely it is spent. And the results are seen by the world leading research,
innovation and industry that the UK consistently produces.

Therefore, when looking at the smart cities agenda, it is essential to have a holistic
approach covering not just technology, but people, place, processes, skills, desired
outcomes and outputs and more. This holistic approach allows for the maximisation of
innovative thinking and solutions in the smart cities space. And depending on the
structures applied, this can focus outcomes and outputs in a variety of ways, such as
for FDI attractiveness, local IP development, local skills creation, global research
collaborations and many more. It can also avoid corporate lock-in and break old
methods of thinking and doing that may be stifling a countries development of
innovation.

City Typologies Dashboard
Cities are facing the multiple challenges of urbanisation.
Connected Places
Catapult has developed a new city typologies tool based on data from 500 global cities
and 1000’s of data points. The tool allows analysis of the unique innovation
-based
attributes of cities in a way that currently does not exist.
This Dashboard This Dashboard helps to navigate the global landscape of urban
innovation
