RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT (RIFA)
Native habitat: South America
Mode of transit: Soil in ships
Invasive in: Southern United States (1930s, mainly 1950s)
Also found in: Australia, Taiwan, China, and the Philippines
Characteristics: Builds mounds in fields and in urban areas; aggressive with a painful bite; can fly short distances and walk; multiplies quickly. Impossible to eradicate.
¹ With a stinging bite and an appetite for anything, the red imported fire ant is an unwelcome species, wherever it lands. In the early 1950s, there was a boom in building in the U.S., resulting in an increased demand for construction materials. Ships from South America often delivered these materials, along with soil, and the ants found that this was a comfortable way to travel.
⁴ Because these invasive ants multiply quickly and can move their colonies, they have become a tremendous problem for homeowners, businesses, schools, and farmers. In a flood, ant 'rafts' of up to 8,000 ants can form in the water in minutes and can float for months. When it finally comes to dry land, the raft quickly comes apart as the ants climb to safety. ' During heavy rain periods, ants will move into homes, autos, and buildings, and attack people. They are attracted to electrical currents, and cause great damage to traffic lights, air conditioners, and gas pumps.
⁵ Learn to recognize these invasive species and how to control them. Without natural enemies, these insects spread and cause a great deal of damage. By keeping a watchful eye on the natural world around us, we can help prevent the spread of invasive species.
