NEWSLETTER DEADLINE

The deadline for the January issue of the Tymes is

December 20th. Please send articles to: zionsuccoffice@comcast.net

Gifts!  We think a lot about them in December.  As I was cleaning out my mother’s house recently, I found a little box with two beautiful embroidered handkerchiefs folded neatly.  It looked like the box had never been opened!  I recall giving my teachers little gifts like that when I was a girl, but I did not remember giving that type of gift to my mother.

There is a wonderful story about a little boy from South Africa who was very excited to present his teacher with a gift for Christmas. Holding it in his little hand, he placed it on her desk.   When she picked it up, she bent down, looked lovingly into his eyes, and remarked, “Thank you so much, but where did you get such a beautiful seashell?” She looked at the shell, knowing in her heart that such shells could only be obtained from a faraway beach. “Surely,” she said to him, “you must have walked a very long way to get this seashell!”  “Yes,” he said, “I did walk a long way, but the long walk is part of the gift.”

Maybe you will receive such a gift this Christmas, one that absolutely takes your breath away!  Maybe the gift represents the patience of driving around the mall many times looking for a parking place.  Maybe the gift is the product of a dedicated needlewoman who pricked her fingers in its making. Maybe the gift is from a garden that was watered and cared for and weeded and loved through very hot summer days.  There is always a story behind the gifts we receive!

Dear sisters and brothers, at Christmas, God gave us a gift in Jesus Christ!  God came near to us, dared to take a long walk to become one of us, showed us what it means to be God with us, Emmanuel.    When we accept that gift, when we invite that gift to be in our lives, we become new people.  From heaven to earth, it was a very long walk indeed and there was so much love behind that walk!  So now, we can rejoice with the angels on that first Christmas night:  Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace among all!  Christmas blessings to each of you! It is my honor and privilege to be your Supply Pastor for these several weeks as your search for a new pastor continues.  Please help me serve you by letting me know when someone needs my help.  Please call the office or my cell phone number (484-818-1719) to let me know if someone is hospitalized or in need of pastoral care.  I am in the church office on Tuesdays, 8:30-12:30.  May our journey, however long it is, be blessed!

Pastor Chris Pifer-Foote

We all enjoyed a dinner together and the children enjoyed making a spider web and spider decoration. It is unclear who was the winner of the golf event due to creative scorekeeping! Thanks to all who attended this fun event!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRIES
Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 1998 by two graduates of the Women’s Leadership Institute at Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut, to knit or crochet items to be given to anyone who needs “a hug from God”.  The items are to be given away unconditionally and NOT to be sold for profit.

Knitting and crocheting is not for “little old ladies”.  Research at the Harvard Medical School has found that when an individual is knitting or crocheting their heart rate can drop 11 beats a minute and their blood pressure drops as well.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 2009 with four ladies and has grown to eight ladies at this time. Zions has received many donations of yarn and knitting needles and crochet hooks. Supplies can be provided.  We welcome anyone (male or female) to join us on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00 in the Chapel Building.   Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 20, 2016.  Join us for a rewarding ministry to help those in need of support and comfort.
