Edward Estlin Cummings (1894–1962) is an American poet famous for his innovations including remarkable structural and stylistic deviations which are well observable in his poem collections ―Tulips and Chimneys‖ and ―XLI Poems‖. His personal style of often associated with the historical avant-garde movements contributed to the experimental literature development in the early and middle XX century. The avant-garde destroys the entrenched traditions in world literature, expressing the new view of poetry and prose.
E. Cummings is an expressionist poet, he experiments with form, syntax and spelling, he also creates nonce words. In many pieces of creation, for example, between words can occur many gaps or absence of capital letters. In the author‘s opinion, such deviations play a crucial role in the full poetic picture of poems. He into the bargain breaks the rules of grammatical order, which makes works difficult to understand by ear (provide an example – the poem ―l(a‖).
Additionally, E. Cummings goes in for fine art, this love for such a type of art is one of the reasons for appearance of the so-called ‗figure poems‘ in his literary heritage. Figure poems are defined as visual poems that are realized in the form of a certain object, for instance, in the form of a leaf or a horse. However, it is important to note that the poet doesn‘t create only extraordinary lyrics, because there are many poems which are similar to what is called a sonnet (―being to timelessness as it‘s to time‖, ―what time is it? it is by every star‖, etc.).
