In a land famous for loving all creatures great and small, one of the smallest-the bat-is not
at all popular in some historic churches. The furry flying mammals, which are strictly
protected by British law, like to bring up their little offspring in the ceilings of old
churches. But they can make a terrible mess of the inside of a church, and have caused
irreparable damage to rare medieval paintings, carvings, and brass work. The leader of the
Movement Against Bats in Churches was quoted as saying, "Our heritage itself is an
