WHY IS THIS?
POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE?
Why is this?
Negative
Many children these days spend most of their time in front of mobile screens. Although there are some reasons which can explain why this is happening, I believe that this is a negative development.
In my opinion, children spend hours on their smartphones because of two clear reasons. Social media can be the first one. In order to get in touch with their friends, children sign in different social media sites such as Instagram, Tiktok, etc. but they do not understand how those sites work and end up spending hours uncontrollably watching different videos which pop up on their screens. But the truth is, those sites are based on special algorithms, which immediately identify viewer’s interests, and show videos accordingly to make people spend more time. Games are considered to be the second reason. They tend to attract a lot of children because they are more interactive. Children can make new friends playing those games and socialize even if it is online. Some of those games like PUBG mobile or WARCRAFT are played within teams against another team, so the feeling of competition may also drive children to play more and more.
Despite those above-mentioned reasons, I think that it is a bad thing when children waste too much time on smartphones. Firstly, the influence of social media can be very negative on children’s behavior. If they use an Instagram, for example, without a parental control, they may start following bloggers who spread inappropriate content or propagate bad behavior. Then, they may try to look ‘cool’ by imitating those people without even realizing whether it is good or bad for them. Consequently, child behavior may get spoiled. Secondly, games can also have a negative impact on children, especially on their academic performance. They may get addicted by playing the games because of their rewarding system. Children will try to unlock new levels and reach the final, and in doing so, they will start ignoring their studies which will influence their grades.
In conclusion, even though there are some motives which drive children to spend more time on their phones, I think this development is totally negative as it affects child behavior and academic performance.
