The  methodologies adopted by these  97 top cited papers were  quite evenly  distributed. 

Fig.  1  indicated  around  39%  was  quantitative  research  papers;  qualitative  and  conceptual 

papers  both  shared  26%  from  the  total.  Five  papers  adopted  both  qualitative  and

quantitative research methods (i.e., hybrid), and two papers reviewed the prior literature on 

hotel  website  evaluations  and  websites  design.  Interestingly,  the  remaining  two  top  cited 

papers  were  not  standard  research  papers.  One  of  them  was  the  editorial  preface  of  the 

ENTER2000 proceedings which highlighted the themes of ENTER conference in that year, 

and  illustrated  the  implications  of  ICT  (Fesenmaier,  Klein,  &  Buhalis,  2000).  This  paper 

ranked 48 with 2 citations per year and its latest citation was in 2011. The other one was a 

one-page abstract that was published in ENTER2006 proceedings about content analysis of 

destination website using brand personality (Douglas & Mills,  2006).  This paper ranked  27 

with 2.86 cites per year. This abstract was still popular, and it has already been cited by two 

papers in 2012.

Other than the 25 conceptual papers, 72 papers adopted various data analysis methods to 

test  their  research  framework.  Since  some  papers  adopted  multiple  data  analysis methods, 

the total instance of data analysis methods was not equal to total number of research papers. 

As  shown  in  Fig.  2,  the  most  popular  analytical  method  was  descriptive  statistics with  41

paper instances. Content analysis was the second most popular  methods with 19 instances, 

followed by chi-square test with 10 instances. The result indicated majority of the top cited 

papers  preferred  bivariate  analysis  methods  to  sophisticated  multivariate  or  scientific  data 

analysis  methodology.  This  is  in  accordance  with  the  findings  in  other  eTourism-related 

review studies (e.g., Wang, Fesenmaier, Werthner, & Wöber, 2010).
