Grace Kim (2017), in the video "How cohousing can make us happier (and live longer)", shares an age-
old antidote to isolation: cohousing, a way of living where people choose to share space with their 
neighbors, get to know them, and look after them. We currently live in cities in large numbers, the 
world's population was evenly divided between urban and rural areas (with urban population on the 
increase). In tower blocks, apartment complexes, and shared residences, we're jammed together. We are 
surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands, of people. However, this does not keep us from feeling 
lonely. The reason behind this, as Grace Kim explains in her TED talk, is that loneliness isn't only 
caused by being alone - it can also be caused by being socially isolated. If you have no actual 
connection to others around you, you can feel lonely amid a crowd. Her passion is cohousing, a type of 
living in which residents opt to share common areas (such as eating and lounge areas) with their 
neighbors. These common spaces thus serve as a focal point for social interaction, ensuring that people 
feel linked to others around them.
