Dutch researchers scanned a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci`s masterpiece and then they experimented with it using “emotion recognition” software. The result showed Mona Lisa was 83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful and 2 percent angry. Leonardo`s painting now hangs in the Louvre in Paris. The work, also known as “La Gioconda”, is believed to be the portrait of the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. The title is a play on her husband`s name. It also means “jolly lady” in Italian.

Harro Stockman, a professor at the University of Amsterdam said the researchers knew the results would be unscientific. The software they used isn`t designed to register delicate emotions. “Facial recognition technology is advancing rapidly, but emotional recognition is still in its early stages,” said Larry Hornak from West Virginia University.
