Antarctica is the southernmost continent on Earth. A vast, frozen desert of ice and snow, it is also the coldest place in the world. Not all of Antarctica completely covered with ice and snow. There are several valleys of barren rock and sand called dry valleys. Wright Valley is such a place. It is protected from rain, snow, and glaciers by a huge mountain chain, and scientists estimate that rain hasn`t fallen here for as long as 2 million years. There are even a few small lakes in Antarctica`s dry valleys. Minerals carried by streams make the water so salty that the lakes do not freeze completely.
