Introduction:

The first section of this briefing note highlights research evidence on reading for pleasure from domestic and international literature; exploring evidence on the trends and benefits of independent reading amongst both primary and secondary- aged children, as well as why children read.


The second section of this briefing covers the evidence on what works in terms of promoting reading for pleasure.
Reading for Pleasure is the entitlement of every child yet how can we foster readers desire and engagement . Our research a two phase Open University and UK Literacy Association project , examined children’s and teachers’ reading lives, and established effective ways to support Reading for Pleasure.

Working with 27 schools we gathered evidence of the subject knowledge and pedagogical practices that nurture reader’s agency and an informal ,social and invitational RfP athos is key ,alongside rich professional repertoires of children’s texts that that tempt. They add that it's also reading that may have begun at someone else’s request, which we continue because we are interested in it. Christina Clark and Kate Rumbold note that reading for pleasure can be described as an act of play, which allows us to experience different worlds in our imagination and a creative and active/ interactive process.
