USS Henry M. Jackson SSBN 730 History


USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) is the fifth Ohio-class nuclear-powered fleet ballistic-missile submarine and the only U.S. Navy ship to have been named for United States Senator Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson (1912–1983) of Washington. Also the only Ohio-class submarine not named after a U.S. state.
The ship originally was to have been named USS Rhode Island. The contract to build Rhode Island was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation at Groton, Connecticut, on June 6, 1977, and her keel was laid down January 19, 1981. Shortly after Senator Jackson died in office suddenly on September 1, 1983, Rhode Island was renamed Henry M. Jackson, and the name Rhode Island was transferred to another Ohio-class submarine, SSBN 740. The Henry M. Jackson was launched October 15, 1983, sponsored by Senator Jackson's daughter, Ms. Anna Marie Jackson, and commissioned October 6, 1984, with Capt. Ralph L. Tindal in command of the Blue Crew and Capt. M. A. Farmer in command of the Gold Crew.
July 7, 1987 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to Bangor after completing its 7th, ten-week, strategic deterrent patrol.
November 14, SSBN 730 (Blue) departed homeport for its 9th strategic deterrent patrol.
February 14, 1988 USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed Bangor, Wash., for its 10th strategic deterrent patrol.
March 4, Capt. R. E. Hawthorne relieved Capt. J. R. Turner as CO of the Henry M. Jackson (Blue).
May 20, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) departed Bangor for its 11th strategic deterrent patrol.
June 13, The fifth Ohio-class submarine arrived in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a week-long port call.
June 17, Capt. A. C. Bernard relieved Capt. S. M. Buescher as CO of SSBN 730 (Gold).
August 29, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed home for its 12th strategic deterrent patrol.
October 13, The Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine successfully conducted a two-missile ripple launch during the 32nd Trident I (C4) Follow-on Operational Test.
October 19, SSBN 730 arived in Long Beach, Calif., for a five-day port visit.
December 8, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) departed Bangor for its 13th strategic deterrent patrol.
March 12, 1989 SSBN 730 (Gold) departed Bangor for its 14th strategic deterrent patrol.
June 18, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) departed homeport for its 15th strategic deterrent patrol.
October 2, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed Bangor for its 16th strategic deterrent patrol.
November 22, SSBN 730 pulled into Pearl Harbor for a five-day port call.
January 11, 1990 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) departed Bangor, Wash., for its 17th strategic deterrent patrol.
March 16, The Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine successfully launched two Trident I missiles during a Follow-on Operational Test.
March 19, The Jackson arived in Long Beach, Calif., for a four-day port visit.
April 30, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed home for its 18th strategic deterrent patrol.
June 15, Capt. A. B. Chaloupka Capt. R. E. Hawthorne as CO of the SSBN 730 (Blue).
August 3, Capt. C. B. Dunn relieved Capt. A. C. Bernard as CO of the Henry M. Jackson (Gold).
August 7, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) departed Naval Submarine Base Bangor for its 19th strategic deterrent patrol.
September 17, The submarine arrived in Pearl Harbor for a week-long port call.
November 15, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed Bangor for its 20th strategic deterrent patrol.
May 7, 1991 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to NSB Bangor after completing its 21st, two-month, strategic deterrent patrol.
September 7, SSBN 730 (Blue) departed homeport for its 23rd strategic deterrent patrol.
June 20, 1992 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to Bangor after completing its 25th, 12-week, strategic deterrent patrol.
June 25, Capt. Walter M. Elliott relieved Capt. A. B. Chaloupka as commanding officer of the Blue Crew.
January 20, 1993 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned home after completing its 27th, two-and-a-half month, patrol.
August 20, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to Bangor after completing a nearly three-month strategic deterrent patrol.
March 4, 1994 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to Bangor after completing its 31st, two-month, strategic deterrent patrol.
June 17, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned to homeport after a ten-week strategic deterrent patrol.
September 29, SSBN 730 (Blue) returned to NSB Bangor after completing its 33rd, 10-week, strategic deterrent patrol.
September 30, Capt. R. C. Wagoner relieved Capt. M. J. Kehoe as CO of the USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold).
November 7, Capt. Conrad J. Donahue relieved Capt. Walter M. Elliott as CO of the Henry M. Jackson (Blue).
December 1, The Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine arrived in Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., for a three-day visit.
December 6, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) successfully launched two C4 missiles during a Follow-on CINC Evaluation Test.
January 7, 1995 SSBN 730 returned to homeport after completing its 34th, two-month, strategic deterrent patrol.
April 20, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to Bangor after completing a two-month strategic deterrent patrol.
July 28, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned home after more than a two-month strategic deterrent patrol.
August 31, SSBN 730 (Blue) departed Bangor, Wash., for its 37th strategic deterrent patrol.
October 7, The Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine arrived in San Francisco for a four-day port call to participate in Fleet Week.
December 14, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed Bangor for its 38th strategic deterrent patrol.
May 10, 1996 The Jackson pulled into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a four-day port call.
May 30, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to homeport after completing a two-month strategic deterrent patrol.
September 6, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold), commanded by Capt. Frank Stewart, returned to Bangor after completing its 40th, two-month, strategic deterrent patrol.
December 10, SSBN 730 (Blue) returned to Bangor after completing its 41st, two-month, strategic deterrent patrol. The Trident submarine participated in exercises Polo Hat 96-3 and Global Guardian.
March 28, 1997 USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned home after a nine-week patrol.

February 19, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) departed Bangor for its 48th strategic deterrent patrol.
March 11, The Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine arrived in NSB Kings Bay for a nine-day port call.
March 25, SSBN 730 successfully launched four Trident I missiles during a Follow-on CINC Evaluation Test.
March 26, The Henry M. Jackson pulled into Port Canaveral, Fla., for a four-day visit.
June 9, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed homeport for its 49th strategic deterrent patrol.
June 28, The Trident submarine returned to NSB Bangor for voyage repair period. Departed again on Aug. 19.
November 16, SSBN 730 pulled into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a six-day port call.
December 8, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to Bangor, Wash., after completing its 50th, 10-week, strategic deterrent patrol.
February 22, 2000 SSBN 730 departed NSB Kings Bay, Ga., after an eight-day port call.
February 26, The fifth Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine successfully launched four Trident I missiles during a Follow-on CINC Evaluation Test.
April 5, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned to homeport after completing its 51st, ten-week, strategic deterrent patrol.
September 3, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) departed Bangor for its 53rd strategic deterrent patrol.
October 15, SSBN 730 pulled into Naval Submarine Base Point Loma for a three-day visit to San Diego.
June 28, 2001 USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned home after two-and-a-half month patrol.
February 14, 2002 USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned to homeport after completing its 57th, two-and-a-half month, strategic deterrent patrol. The TRIDENT submarine participated in USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Battle Group's Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), off the coast of southern California, Feb. 3-6.
August 9, SSBN 730 pulled into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a four-day port call.
September 18, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned to Bangor after completing its 59th, two-and-a-half month, strategic deterrent patrol.
October 1, 2004 The Jackson started Trident II (D5) backfit at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
April 14, 2008 Cmdr. Lyle E. Hoag relieved Cmdr. Kevin D. Jones as commanding officer of the USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue Crew) during a ceremony at the Jackson Park Chapel in Bremerton.
March 15, 2010 Cmdr. James M. Bilotta relieved Cmdr. Daniel Arensmeyer as CO of the SSBN 730 (Gold) during a change-of-command ceremony at the Keyport Undersea Museum in Keyport, Wash. Arensmeyer took command of USS Henry M. Jackson April 27, 2007, following the boat’s successful Engineered Refueling Overhaul (EROH).
July 8, Cmdr. Eugene Nemeth relieved Cmdr. Lyle E. Hoag as CO of the SSBN 730 (Blue) during a change-of-command ceremony at Bangor.
July 30, Sailors from the USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) commemorated the boat's namesake, and her upcoming 75th Trident strategic deterrent patrol during a ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.
November 4, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned to Bangor after completing the 38-day patrol. She is the first Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine to complete 75 Trident strategic deterrent patrols.
February 27, 2011 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue), commanded by Cmdr. Matt Terwilliger, returned to homeport following a 60-day strategic deterrent patrol.
May 26, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold), commanded by Cmdr. Jeffrey N. Farah, returned to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor after completing the 56-day strategic deterrent patrol.
January 21, 2012 SSBN 730 (Gold) returned to Bangor, Wash., following a strategic deterrent patrol.
May 15, USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to homeport following a strategic deterrent patrol.
March 23, 2013 USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue) returned to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor following a 43-day strategic deterrent patrol.
May 3, Cmdr. John H. Moretty relieved Cmdr. Matthew D. Terwilliger as CO of the Jackson (Blue) during a change-of-command ceremony at the Naval Undersea Warfare Museum in Keyport, Wash.
May 15, USS Henry M. Jackson (Gold) returned to Bangor after completing the strategic deterrent patrol.
