WRITING SKILL Using Supporting Sentences

As you saw in Unit Why we buy, paragraphs usually have one main idea. the main idea is expressed in a topic sentence. the rest of the sentences in the paragraph support and help explain the main idea. There are two types of supporting sentences. : Supporting ideas expand on the main idea. They can be in different forms, such as reasons, examples, or steps in a process. Supporting details expand on supporting ideas. Like supporting ideas, they can be in different forms such as facts, examples, or explanation. Supporting sentences must relate to the topic sentence. You can link supporting sentences with the connecting words and phrases.
