The 5 minute podcast I heard was like a monologue. It talks about airplanes and global warming. The podcast is narrated in passenger language. She didn’t have enough time to wait for the train and got a ticket for the plane. She seems to be returning home after a long song. The reason is that She said “Alone days are gone”. She said the reason she was returning home was that her child had written her a letter. Then she looked out of the window of the passenger plane at 30,000 feet above the ground, the vast expanses of empty oceans and uninhabited lands, and thought about how much impact humans have on the earth. In the podcast it mentioned that humans are the biggest threat to the natural environment today, and that the planes that take us to our destination quickly and easily are the biggest threat to global warming today, that we have money and free time to spend, facinating places to explore but unfortunately it is reported that planes produce more carbon dioxide than other public transport and that CO2 is now a greenhouse gas that traps solar heat, leading to a sharp rise in air temperature. At the end of the podcast, it is said that air travelers have to pay 25 pounds for a company called Future Forest, and the speaker returned form Japan to england yesterday and she is happy for paying 25 pounds in order to plant 3 trees and now the only thing that makes her lose sleep is the jet lag.
I learned about 20 new words by listening to this podcast such as uninhabited land, departure lounge, guilty consciences so on. I found the definitions of each of them and found out what these words meant. For instance:
Uninhabited - not occupied or lived in by people : not inhabited
Rush - (of air or a liquid) flow strongly
Contribute – help to cause or bring about.
Resemble - have a similar appearance to or qualities in common with (someone or something); look or seem like.
Departure lounge - a seating area in an airport where passengers wait immediately prior to boarding
When I first heard the podcast knew what it was about. The second time I heard it, I understood other information. I had to hear it 5 times to understand exactly what the podcast was about. I think this podcast has been helpful in developing my listening skills. Because through this podcast, I also learned the meaning of words I didn’t know and how to pronounce them. I think the next time these words come across in listening tasks, I can easily understand them.
