2. Changing the role of universities in the digital age.
Born in Europe in the 
Middle Ages, academic centers of universities were graduate schools. Among those 
who completed the faculty, excellent students continued to study theology, law, and 
medicine etc. Current universities are also centered on graduate schools with 
research, while there is education in undergraduate schools.
“For decades, college degrees have served as a significant status symbol, one 
of the world’s most recognizable markers for being smart. A college degree is a 
definable accomplishment certifying years of study; there is some validity to the 
notion that people who graduate from college, on average, are indeed smarter than the 
average non-degree holder.

Looking at the main features of the university, “The American university has 
been an arena for boisterous disputes about the nature of the academic enterprise and 
a laboratory of experimentation on a range of fundamental social questions. Some say 
that college is simply preparation for a career. But no human life is defined 
completely by paid employment. Professional man, therefore, cannot be the true end 
of a university education. Others champion the sophisticate’s proud ability to ‘see 
through’ conventional views, to critique existing society and cultivate one’s 
individuality”

Detailed knowledge about the way schools first operated and our first evidence 
about the ways that people thought about education (in Western perspectives, of 
course) come from ancient Greece. “In fact, the word ‘school’ comes from the Greek 
‘schole’ and interestingly ‘schole’ means leisure. Then, it seems, the assumption was 
that leisure was synonymous with learning and contemplation.
