Application: tables of contents (i)
Ask your student to look at a sample thesis in their area of study which
has a similar research perspective to their own and answer the follow-
ing set of questions:
(a) How many sections is the thesis divided into? Is a numbering sys-
tem used for sections and subsections? How many levels are there
(e.g. 1.5.2 = three levels)?
(b) Which sections are included before the introduction (e.g. abstract,
acknowledgements, etc.)? How are these set apart from the main
sections of the thesis (e.g. with Roman numerals)?
