2) Picture dictation

  • Tell Pts:

  • Dictation 2 is called ‘Picture dictation’ and you won’t write words, but draw objects.

  • Listen and draw several objects.

    • Check the instruction.

    • Dictate location of the objects in the picture. Don’t dictate too fast to let Pts keep up with your pace.

Note: The words in brackets are optional. Dictate them if Pts are able to cope with these words:
In the middle of a room there is a square table. There is a book, a lamp and a vase with beautiful flowers on the table. There is a ball under the table. There is a chair on the left of the table. There is an armchair between the table and the cat. There is a carpet on the floor. There is a round clock on the wall.


  • Ask Pts to compare their pictures in pairs.

  • Show the original picture.


3) Change the text dictation

  • Tell Pts:

  • You are Ls now.

  • The name of the dictation is ‘Change the text’, because you should change the text when you write the dictation.

  • Write all verbs in the dictation in the Present Simple, 3rd person, singular.

  • If I say ‘worked’, you’ll write ‘works’, if I say ‘ran’, you’ll write ‘runs’.

  • Check the instruction.

  • Say to Pts:

  • I’ll dictate the text 3 times: first - the whole text, second – sentence by sentence making pauses for you to write and third – again the whole text for you to check your dictations.

John cleaned his teeth, took a shower and had breakfast. He had cheese and bread for breakfast. John did not want tea, so he drank some coffee. He went to school. John was happy because he got an excellent mar
4) Whistle dictation

  • Say to Pts:

    • You are Ls again.

    • The dictation you’ll write is called Whistle dictation.

    • You’ll write only words which I won’t dictate but I’ll whistle.

  • Ask Pts comprehension questions, e.g.:

  • Which words will you write?

There were two brothers, one good and the other (whistle). The first brother was tall and the second brother was (whistle). One brother liked white colour and the other liked (whistle). One brother had a cat and the other had a (whistle).

  • Say to Pts:

    • In pairs exchange your dictations.

    • Look at the flipchart and check the words.
