In the textile industry, yarn was brought from the store to be milled. The device had a "store" which was memory to hold 1,000 numbers of 40 decimal digits each. Numbers from the "store" were transferred to the "mill" for processing. It was programmed using two sets of perforated cards. One set to direct the operation and the other for the input variables. However, after more than 17,000 pounds of the British government's money, the thousands of cogged wheels and gears never fully worked together. During a nine-month period in 1842–43, Ada Lovelace translated the memoir of Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea. The memoir covered the Analytical Engine. The translation contained Note G which completely detailed a method for calculating Bernoulli numbers using the Analytical Engine. This note is recognized by some historians as the world's first written computer program. Software Software is a generic term for organized collections of compyuter date and instructions, often broken into two majot categories, system software that provides the basic nontask-specific functions of the compyuter, and application software which is used by users to accomplish specific task. A. System software is responsible for controlling, integrating, and managing individual hardware components of a computer system so that other software and the users of the system see it as a functional unit without having to be concerned with the lowlevel details such as transferring data from memory to disk, or rendering text into a display.Generally display of software consists of an operating system and some fundamental utilities such as disk formatters, file manegers ,displey manegers, text editors, user authentication and manegment tools, and networking and device control software. B. Application software B. application software is used to accomplish spacific tasks other than just running the computer system. Application software may consist of a single program, such as an image viewer; a small collection of programs (often called a software package) that work closely together to accomplish a task, such as a spreadsheet or text processing system; a larger collection (often called a software suite) of related but independent programs and packages that have a common user interface or shared data format, such as Microsoft Office, which consists of closely integrated word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc. ; or a software system, such as a database management system, which is a collection of fundamental programs that may provide some service to a variety of other independent applications.
