Question: Are there any tricks for staying objective when reading articles?
Answer:  The  best  of  us  can  find  that  hard,  especially  if  it’s  a  juicy  story!
Unfortunately  staying  objective  is  the  whole  point  of  this  exercise.  When  the
general public read a newspaper they don’t find themselves writing gags, but we
do,  because  that’s  our  intention.  Reading  the  article  slowly  and  out  loud  will
help. If you’re working near others and don’t want to be the nutter, try reading
the article over and over again. It should have the same effect. When I do this by
the third or fourth reading my brain is so bored with the overall meaning that it’s
only too pleased to look for interesting asides. If I have to tackle a difficult story
because I have been given that subject, I read everything I can find so I get lots
of  different  angles  on  the  same  story.  I  once  had  to  write  about  the  European
Exchange  Rate  Mechanism  for  a  radio  show.  I  read  a  three  page  broadsheet
article about it over and over again until I found the line.
‘Once countries are in they can’t pull out.’
I was able to write the joke:
‘Which is obviously upsetting Catholic countries.’
I’d  managed  to  do  a  sex  joke  about  the  European  Union  –  but  hey,  that’s  my
skill!
