This delightful book of memories of the Duke of Windsor's youth, of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria, of his grandfather Edward VII, and of his own close family circle over which presided the majestic personality of his father George V, provides an intimate glimpse of a world gone by. The universally-loved Prince of Wales of the 'Twenties and early 'Thirties delighted everyone with his informality and his sincerity in softening the rigid traditions that had long set the British Royal Family on a remote pedestal. The precedents he set unquestionably paved the way for the new conception of the monarchy as we know it today. For, while his father and mother preserved the decorum instituted by Queen Victoria, the young Prince found more to his taste the unconventional ideas of his grandfather Edward VII. And his experiences in the First World War, which brought him into close touch with his fellow men, encouraged his reaction against the pomp and splendour re-imposed at Court as the war ended. Change was inevitable in the new world that followed the holocaust of 1914-18, and the young Prince was soon the leader not only of fashion, which was an outward expression of the new ideas sweeping the country, but in his approach to the problem of keeping in touch with the new attitudes of mind among the people. But it is in the fashions of the period that the new modes and manners are most strikingly reflected, and many of the Duke's reminiscences are devoted to his memories of the changes which he initiated. This is a unique book, for only he is able to show us what life was like within the sheltered walls of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle at that time, and his memories are illustrated with a fascinating collection of pictures from his private albums of family photographs.
FAMILY ALBUM GREAT BRITAIN
We are looking for a family whose love of photography spans generations, and whose photographs capture - perhaps without even realising it – the changing social history of Britain.
We are looking for those seemingly everyday moments that will help tell the story of how Britain has changed over the last 60 years.
