In fact, children which have to acquire a language with a three-gender system or in which morphonological markers denote several categories simultaneously, e.g. gender, number and case, need more time to master the category of gender. However, data from Polish (Smoczyńska 1985) call into question the generalizations presented above. Formal marking of gender in Polish is acquired at an earlier stage than is the case in Russian, even though structurally the two languages are very similar.
