The Enlightenment had a lasting impact on the world. Enlightenment ideas have been especially influential in politics. The world’s many democracies are built on these basic Enlightenment ideas such as: individual freedom, free and fair elections, the rights of citizens, people’s right to participate in their government, and the government’s responsibility to its citizens. In the United States, Enlightenment ideas continue to guide our political system.
The government has a responsibility to its citizens to uphold their rights and to work to improve the country. Although different people have different opinions about what is best for the country, all citizens have the right and the responsibility to communicate their ideas to the government. The Enlightenment brought political modernization to the west, in terms of focusing on democratic values and institutions and the creation of modern, liberal democracies.
The Enlightenment included a range of ideas centered on the value of human happiness, the pursuit of knowledge obtained by means of reason and the evidence of the senses, and ideals such as liberty, progress, toleration, fraternity, constitutional government, and separation of church and state.For this period, many writers, political scientists, ordinary people and officials have contributed due to their rare works and ideas.
Liberty meant freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and freedom from unreasonable government (torture, censorship, and so on). Enlightenment writers, such as Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau, influenced ordinary readers, politicians, and even heads of state all over the Western world.The Enlightenment produced numerous books, essays, inventions, scientific discoveries, laws, wars and revolutions. The American and French Revolutions were directly inspired by Enlightenment ideals and respectively marked the peak of its influence and the beginning of its decline.Literature, like many other fields, was greatly changed during the Enlightenment, a period during which independent though was embraced, skepticism ran freely through work, and new values, including an emphasis on science, became quite common among the educated classes.The Enlightenment Era is also known as the Golden Age of Satire. Enlightenment Authors promote advance ideals such as the separation of the church and state and a constitutional government. The ideas of the Enlightenment undermined the authority of the monarchy and the Church.
