2-TUNEL The project’s initial price was $3.29 billion, but the contractor and the state of Washington have been embroiled in a lawsuit concerning hundreds of millions of dollars to compensate for delays on the project and repairs to the TBM. To help cover the cost of construction, as well as on-going maintenance and operation, the new tunnel charges a toll depending on the time of day. In the first few months of operation 80,000 vehicles used the tunnel per day.
3. With traffic now driving over the estimated $6.416 billion new bridge the original structure needed to be demolished. The work, priced around $239 million, took three years often in close proximity of moving traffic. Unlike the old double-decker bridge the new section has vehicles traveling on the same level for more expansive views. The new bridge includes bike and pedestrian paths.
