Introduction
When you are writing it is important that the connections between your ideas are made very clear. If you do not make clear links between your ideas then you cannot be certain that the reader will make the connections that you have intended. You can make your thoughts clear by using linking words and phrases to connect your ideas. For this reason linking words and phrases are often called connectives. Connectives act like a road map for the reader to indicate the flow and order of your writing and ideas. The use of linking words and phrases makes it easier for the reader to follow your ideas between parts of a sentence, from one sentence to another, and from one paragraph to another. Selecting the right connectives also forces you to think about how you are linking your ideas and whether the connections make sense or not. Particular words and phrases serve different functions when connecting ideas. For example, they can signal or signpost the use of additional information, opposition or contrast, cause and effect, emphasis, clarification, or a relationship in time or sequence. The following linking words and phrases can be used to provide your reader with indications about how your ideas are connected in your writing.Certain rules for the use of prepositions exist both in modern English and in Russian, while in both languages there is a huge number of stable phrases and expressions that have to be learned by heart.
Unfortunately, one cannot do without prepositions in any language, especially in English. The absence of prepositions in the language complicates the ability to construct a sentence and correctly express one's thought; moreover, prepositions affect the meaning of the words with which they are associated, often changing their meaning beyond recognition. In Russian, the relationship between the members of a sentence is established using cases. Due to the fact that cases in English are presented very modestly (for comparison, in modern English there are only three cases left, in Russian - six, in Finnish - about fifteen, in Hungarian - eighteen), it is prepositions that are one of the most important means of expressing relationships between words in a sentence.
This work is devoted to the study of the combinatory possibilities of the prepositions at, in, on in English and Russian.
The relevance of the work is due to the current state of research in this area of vocabulary, when the capabilities and functions of each preposition separately remain insufficiently studied. Today, English occupies an important place in the life of people and is an important language of international communication. If we consider the English language from the point of view of importance and relevance, then it is almost the most necessary in our everyday life. This is confirmed by the fact that English is the national and national language of such countries as: South Africa, England, New Zealand, USA, Australia, Canada and some others.
