Warning signs 

of a geyser

The gas bubbles pictured provide advance warning that Iceland’s famous Strokkur 

geyser is about to blow. The photo was taken a few thousandths of a second before 

it erupted. It earned the photographer, 17-year-old Dane Ela Ugur, a Gold Award 

in the 2009 science photo contest held by MILSET (International Movement for 

Science and Technology in Leisure Time). The aim of this annual contest for 

under-25s is to provide a space for young people to express creatively, in pictures, 

what they observe in the science world. To participate, all you need to do is take 

photos and submit them by the contest deadline.
