PETER
I will.
ASLAN
Come. The animals are already starting to celebrate. Edmund will recover in no time now. Why not join the celebration until Edmund and Lucy are ready.
SUSAN
Ready?
ASLAN
Ready to be crowned.
ASLAN rushes off.
SUSAN
Crowned?
They exit.
SCENE 18
Horns are heard. Birdsong. Beautiful music. The Lighting is bright and warm.
The Animals enter in a huge celebration. There is dancing and singing, but in time they settle into a more official configuration.
The Pevensie children enter and line up. The Lion stands behind Peter, holding a crown. MRS BEAVER stands behind SUSAN, and the BEAVER stands behind EDMUND. TUMNUS stands behind LUCY.
ASLAN enters. Everyone kneels.
ASLAN
Rise. Let us celebrate. The four thrones of Cair Paravel will be filled. Peter, you are hereby crowned High King Peter. Hereafter you shall be known as Peter the Magnificent.
The Lion crowns PETER.
ALL
Hail King Peter!
ASLAN
You are hereby crowned Queen Susan. Hereafter, you shall be known as Queen Susan the Gentle.
MRS BEAVER crowns SUSAN.
ALL
Hail Queen Susan!
ASLAN
You are hereby crowned King Edmund. Hereafter, you shall be known as King Edmund the Just.
The BEAVER crowns EDMUND.
ALL
Hail King Edmund!
ASLAN
And you are hereby crowned Queen Lucy. Hereafter, you shall be know as Queen Lucy the Valiant.
TUMNUS crowns LUCY.
ALL
Hail Queen Lucy!
ASLAN
A golden age now begins in Narnia.
There is great cheering and celebration. The Animals dance and sing, and the children are quickly swept up on the fun. During all the celebration, ASLAN slips away and vanishes. LUCY looks about and sees that he is gone.
LUCY
Where has Aslan gone?
TUMNUS
Oh, off somewhere else, I’d guess. He has other countries to look after. He’s not a tame Lion, you know. He’ll go where he pleases, do as he likes. But he is good.
Slowly, the Animals begin to filter off. PETER, SUSAN, and EDMUND start to listen in.
LUCY
Will we be all right without him?
TUMNUS
I suppose that’s up to you, Queen Lucy. And your sister and brothers. Aslan must have faith in you though, since he put you in those thrones. So have faith in him, and trust that you can do the job. I suppose.
EDMUND
I’ll say this for Narnia: it isn’t boring.
TUMNUS
There’ll be more to do. There’s still a few wicked creatures out there you’ll have to deal with. And then there’s all the damage to the land to fix. And other nations to make friends with, now that the Witch is gone.
SUSAN
There’s other nations here too?
TUMNUS
Of course. It’s the world. There’s a lot of life here, and a lot of living to be done.
PETER
Well… Let’s begin.
They exit. More celebrating is heard.
SCENE 19
Darkness. The celebrating fades into birdsong. Dim blue lighting slowly rises USC on the Wardrobe, illuminating it and the FIR TREES next to it.
QUEEN LUCY enters. She is in her early twenties and is dressed for hunting.
QUEEN LUCY
It came in this way.
QUEEN SUSAN and KING EDMUND both enter. They are also in their twenties, and also dressed for hunting.
QUEEN SUSAN
You’re sure it was a white stage you saw?
QUEEN LUCY
Yes! It was the White Stag.
KING EDMUND
And who was it that told you it grants you wishes, if you catch it?
QUEEN LUCY
Old Tumnus said so, many times.
KING EDMUND
You can’t believe everything Fauns say, you know.
They laugh. KING PETER enters.
KING PETER
Well... If this White Stag exists, it would be in this part of the forest. I don’t think I’ve been here in… twenty years.
QUEEN SUSAN
Nor I.
QUEEN LUCY
(Turning toward the FIR TREES) I think I saw something.
KING EDMUND
I fear we’re going to get our royal robes royally filthy.
They move into the FIR TREES.
QUEEN SUSAN
Mind the branches.
KING EDMUND
It is a bit close in here.
They move into the Wardrobe. Slowly, the FIR TREES enter the Wardrobe, and Narnia begins the slowly transformation into the Spare Room.
QUEEN LUCY
It’s getting a bit stuffy.
EDMUND
Get off my foot!
SUSAN
You’re on mine!
PETER
Watch out!
The children spill out of the Wardrobe, wearing the same clothing with which they entered. In silence, they pick themselves up off the floor and look around. They recognize that they are children again, then look around some more and slowly come to remember their location.
There is the sound of a doorknob turning, and the PROFESSOR enters.
PROFESSOR
I say, there you are. Mrs. MacReady’s been looking for you.
Silence.
PROFESSOR
Is everything all right?
LUCY
Professor?
PROFESSOR
Yes. That’s right. (pause) I say, Mrs. MacReady’s been looking for you. I don’t think she wants you in these older rooms. Come, follow me, I’ll fix you some tea. I think this rain will be letting up soon, and then you can go outside, perhaps.
Pause. The children all look back at the Wardrobe.
PROFESSOR
Oh, I wouldn’t bother with that old Wardrobe. I don’t think you’ll be getting what you want out of that old thing again.
PETER
Again?
PROFESSOR
No, no. I suspect you’ll have to look elsewhere for what you want. Or in fact, don’t look at all. What you want will probably appear when you’re least expecting it. Just enjoy the rain while it’s here, then the sunlight. But don’t worry. It’ll be back again. Someday. (pause) Come along.
The PROFESSOR exits. Silence. The Children look at each other. PETER exits. SUSAN exits. LUCY and EDMUND share a look. EDMUND exits. LUCY close the Wardrobe, then exits.
The Lighting dims out, leaving only the Wardrobe lit.
Blackout.
THE END
