On 16 December 2012 a female 
physiotherapy
 
intern
 was beaten and gang 
raped in 
Delhi
. Being badly injured, she died thirteen days later. This incident caused 
huge resentment in the country leading to wide scale protests throughout the country, 
especially in the capital. People came out on the streets, India Gate and Raisana Hills 
were flocked with the protestors. Thousands of protesters clashed with police, 
overturned cars, and battled

 units. Demonstrators were

, shot with 
water cannons
 and 
tear gas
 shells, and arrested. This protest was 
unusual in the sense that it was spontaneous without the instigation of any political 
leader. Through this remonstration the protestors (mainly youth) gave vent to their 
anguish and exasperation against the government. All efforts made by the 
government to curb the situation added fuel to it. Media, especially electronic media 
took this incidence seriously and almost all news channels highlighted this heinous 
act on the prime time. Media exposed the issue so much that government was 
compelled to take strict action against the culprits. All of the perpetrators are now 
behind the bars. After public protests a Committee was constituted under former 
Chief Justice of India J.S. Verma to look into the possible amendments to the 
criminal law for faster trial and proper punishment for criminals accused of 
committing sexual assault of extreme nature against women. The Committee working 
swiftly presented its report and recommendation in less than a month to the Govt of 
India.

All this would not have been possible had media not supported the cause. Let 
us take the reporting of NDTV 24X7( a leading English news channel

) on Delhi 
gang rape. NDTV has been following the issue of brutal molestation of the girl right 
from its happening and has been has been reporting it responsibly. The news channel 
gave the victim of the rape a pseudonym “Amanat”. Here the name itself has a social 
connotation. It symbolises something that we treasure and not exhibit it, something 
which is very valuable to us. In a way the channel tried to convey a message that girls 
should be protected as a treasure not as a liability. In a series of news and talk shows, 
NDTV tried to inform and educate the public about the incident and its repercussions.
