Material and Data
An E-survey was conducted in the last week of September, 24 to 28 September
2020. Students enrolled in different schools across Haryana were the target
population. An easy to understand questionnaire was prepared to extract relevant data
on ‘basic information,’ ‘depression,’ and ‘anxiety’ self-respect, sadness, insecurity,
inferiority related information from a large target group. An online-based social
platform was used to distribute this standardized e-questionnaire, developed by using
the Google Form, to the students. Secondary and Senior Secondary school students
from all divisions in Haryana were contacted through teachers and school heads. The
information was analysed in three consecutive levels, such as univariate, bivariate,
and multivariate analysis. Students were experiencing heightened depression and
anxiety. More than 23 thousand students studying in Haryana participated in this
cross-sectional web-based survey giving a clue about their disrupted lessons in school
and financial decline at home greatly affecting their mental health. It is expected that
both the government and private schools could work together to fix the academic
delays and financial problems to reduce depression and anxiety among the school
students.
‘Basic Information’ contained the telephone number of parents including names of
students, father’s name, sex, rural/urban/name of school, government or private,
class, resident of Haryana or migrated, gender of the student (‘male’ and ‘female’),
‘place of residence’ of students (‘rural’ and ‘urban’).

Survey Report

37
The present survey was conducted on 23607 students of classes 9 to 12
studying in board and non-board classes. This comparative analysis has been made to
assess whether the students are sad due to Covid 19 and social distancing restrictions.
Here, first, we need to understand the level of dejection among the students or do
they still retain their positivity. Whether the issue of anxiety or misery is temporary
or not? Whether they are too frustrated with the given critical situation to take
decisions and responsibilities for themselves and their loved ones or they are more
responsible now? The survey gave an overview of the predicament of the target
students, on the basis of which inferences can be drawn to lead one to devise
startegies.11183 responses of students of board classes and 12424 responses of
students of non-board classes have been recorded in the survey. On the basis of this
survey, it is found that six percent of the non-board students feel sad and isolated
whereas 8 percent of the students of board classes feel sad and isolated. 34 percent of
the non-board and 35 percent of the board class students express that they sometimes
felt sad and isolated. However, it is interesting to mention here that 60 percent
students of non-board 57 percent students of board classes express that they never felt
sad or frustrated. Based on the survey conducted it is found that the mental state of
students in the state is not bad. A questionnaire was made available to the students to
record their responses. If the comparison is made between students of board and non-
board classes regarding whether they get worried or not, it is found that 38 percent of
students of board classes and 31 percent students of non-board classes expressed that
it happens sometimes. 31 percent say that it never happens. Thus, there is not much
difference which is indicated between the level of anxiety amongst the students
studying in board and non-board classes.
In a similar context a comparison was made between students studying in rural
areas and urban areas. It is worth mentioning here that the difference comes between
2 to 5 percent which shows that the students are assertive and optimistic regarding the
future. The students who have showed a negative outlook were very less in number.
On the basis of this survey it is deduced that there is nothing which is
worrisome regarding the mental health of the students. However, the students might
be having concerns regarding prepara tion of exams, inability to meet friends,
inability to go out of houses for playing and shopping, inability to meet their relatives
etc.
The response to the question whether the students are worried about their
future it is found that they are worried for their future. 43 % students of board classes
and 38 percent students of non-board classes expressed their worries. The percentage
of students who were not worried is 19 percent for board classes and 22 percent for
non-board classes. However, 38 percent board class student and 40 percent non board
class students were worried only sometimes.
A study of findings reveals that if students are in a state of anxiety there are
certain reasons. The schools are closed for several months and many students are not
able access the online education. There is a doubt prevailing regarding the reduction
of the syllabus. How much and when will the syllabus be reduced is also a cause of
their concern.

38
If we analyse the survey on the basis of rural and urban variables it is found
that 42 percent rural and 44 percent urban board class students always remain in the
state of worry. However, 37 percent rural and 44 percent urban students expressed
this state as sometimes. But 21 percent rural and 17 percent urban students are such
that they don’t worry at all.
A similar comparison has also been made between migrant and Haryana
resident students, it is revealed that 43 percent and 46 percent migrant students are
worried for their future. 38 percent Haryana residents and 46 percent migrant are
worried sometimes. 19 percent Haryana resident and 17 percent migrant students of
board classes are not at all worried.
The above survey presents positive deductions. Some of the points worth
mentioning here are that the students even if are worried do not feel that they are not
an important part of society. They feel that their role in society is significant. 76
percent of them feel that they have important role to play in society, 18 percent had
mixed response and only 6 percent revealed that their role in society is insignificant
because the employment of their parents has been affected. If the same question was
applied taking the government and private school students as the two variables it is
found that 76 percent of the government school students were confident in
comparison to 73 percent of the private school students which shows that the
government school students are mentally sounder than the private school students.
The same trend is revealed by taking the variables as urban and rural where 78
percent of the rural students in comparison to 72 percent urban students feel that they
play a significant role in the society. If a comparison is made between the students
who are residents of Haryana with the migrant students, the survey reveals that 76
percent Haryana resident students and 71 percent migrant students feel that they are
important citizens of the society.
