Edward Gibbon, was born 1737,in England.He was English rationalist, historian and scholar best known as the author of “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” (1776–88), a continuous narrative from the 2nd century to the fall of Constantinople.
Gibbon’s grandfather, Edward, had made a considerable fortune and his father, also Edward, was able to live an easygoing life in society and Parliament. He married Judith,whose family originated in Germany.Edward is the only child in his family and other siblings died in his childhood.
Edward attended to Kingston grammar school in Plutney in 1746. In 1749 he was admitted to Westminster School.
One of his most important work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788, is known for the quality and irony of its prose, its use of primary sources, and its polemical criticism of organised religion.
