The pros of using SNSs in education are related to the following aspects:
- SNSs can help teachers connect with students about assignments, upcoming events, post useful links and samples of work; all t hese may be done outside the classroom due to the flexibility [4, p. 5] and structure of such sites; - they are a cost-effective teaching resource;- teacher self-disclosure in terms of, for example, favourite quotations, books,philosophers, scientists, painters, sculptors, musicians, educational or art-related events enhances teacher-student connectivity as well as the students‟ motivation; a distinction should be drawn between the private and professional accounts that a teacher may create o nline; it is advisable that the very private information related to the teacher should not be published on his/her professional account; - though emoticons are usually categorized as belonging to informal, unprofessional communication, the use of some hap py faced emoticon now and then may help shy students overcome inferiority complexes and become more self-assertive and open; - regarded as Internet based learning tools, SNSs involve students actively in learning by stimulating and luring them into surfing to various information sites, posting comments and participating in online discussions [4, p. 6], also providing the major advantage of receiving almost instant feedback from teacher and peers;
- SNSs allow students to contact other students about assign ments, exams, work together in an online group, upload videos, photos of their curricular and extracurricular educational activities and projects;
- SNSs allow the creation of groups that may share common interests: a classroom of students may turn into a group on a social networking site with the teacher as coordinator, mediator, facilitator of information;
The cons of using SNSs as educational tools may relate to aspects such as :
- all learners are expected to adopt proper language and behaviour, self - monitor their attitudes when engaged in educational activities on SNSs; compliance with a certain moral and ethical etiquette is required, as well as a certain level of professionalism both in teacher-students, as well as in student-student interaction;
- some teachers may not be willing to spend part of their free time in online interaction and communication with their students via SNSs;
- there is no official, national and/or international standard regarding the use of SNSs as a teaching method, no certified, institutionalized way of evaluating the results of the educational activities conducted on SNSs;
- the possible risks related to the privacy settings of SNSs accounts;
- studies have shown that the main reason students use SNSs is social purp oses ; the second reason students use SNSs is for informal (student -to -student) learning; most students almost never use SNSs for formal teaching, which would involve official teaching staff and formal assessment [12, p. 143];
- the use of SNSs could lead to alienation, disengagement and disconnection with the real world, distraction of students from their studies [ 16, p. 165].
