An ideology is a body of ideas, and those who agree with the main idea of something take an ideological stand to support it. Unlimited freedom is a strong ideological belief in countries like the United States, and communism was once the ideological foundation in parts of Europe. Some follow ideological ideals that are logical, while others take stands that seem, well, idiotic or illogical, like racism. In medieval society the church commanded almost all ideological power in European Societies, but in late modern pluralistic societies no certain institutions or ‘agents’ are holders of Similar amounts of ideological power. Today, ideological power is anonymous at least in Educational matters. It is a matter of what seems reasonable and legitimate to people who, as Teachers, students or parents, are involved in education. A brief example can illustrate the point that ideological power plays an important role in Education: One of the most important transformations of education in primary and lower Secondary school during the last 25 years or so has been the individualisation of the methods of Teaching and learning in the classroom (Klette, 2003; Laursen, 2006). Students today simply spend Much more time working alone than they did 25 years ago. This probably has important Consequences for the education and socialisation of the students. Important in this connection is That this transformation has not been decided politically; probably most educational political power Holders in the national ministries and in the EU and OECD are totally unaware of this Development. Individualisation has happened because it has become more and more difficult to Manage modern students in whole class teaching. Individual work and work in informal small Groups seem more reasonable and are more easily accepted by the students. And therefore these Kinds of work are used more often by the teachers. The reason why modern students more readily Accept individual work, and are more difficult to manage doing whole class work, is a general trend In culture and society towards individualisation. In this article I will briefly sketch a concept of power in general, and especially of ideological Power, based primarily on the work of sociologists Anthony Giddens and Michael Mann. I will look Closer at power in relation to education, and illustrate the role of ideological power by discussing The recent trend towards the flexible school.
