Alexander the Great was born more than 2,300
years ago. In his teens, Alexander was taught
by the most famous Greek teacher of his time,
Aristotle. While still a youth, Alexander
tamed a wild horse that only he was able to
ride. He later rode that horse into battle for
more than eighteen years. Alexander spent his
teen years learning the skills of warfare and
leadership.
When he was twenty, his father was murdered.
The army chose Alexander as their leader. He
went to war and defeated several Greek cities.
He soon brought all of Greece under his
control. Alexander then began a long series
of battles against the Persian Empire. This
empire was ruled by King Darius. Alexander
had an army of more than 32,000 foot
soldiers. He also had about 5,000 mounted
horse soldiers. He defeated Darius in a major
battle, but the king escaped.
Alexander then traveled to Egypt. He was
crowned as a pharaoh, or god-king, by the
Egyptians. They were grateful to get rid of
their Persian rulers. He founded the city of
Alexandria in that country. It would become
one of their greatest cities. He returned
to Persia and defeated Darius again. This
time, Alexander captured over 7,000 tons of
treasure. He used it to pay the costs of all of
his future battles. He later traveled through
many lands to the mountains, which were
the gateway to India. He won several battles
there and even fought against armies that
used elephants like tanks. Alexander died of
unknown causes when he was thirty-two years
old. Some say it was malaria or typhoid fever.
Others say he was poisoned. In any case, he
will always be remembered for the life he
lived—as one of the greatest commanders of
all time.
