While Sardinia is a part of Italy, it is very definitely apart from it - geographically, culturally, and linguistically. It is surprising, therefore that Sardinians often refer to Italy as il Continente. They regard the mainlanders as belonging to a different nation. "What there is in Sardinia there is not in Italy.
