The above research notes but does not recognize (unlike the U.I.L.) the records held by athletes from academies in the early years since they were more akin to today’s junior colleges. Thus the progression begins with the “first HS record” and notes when the 440-yard dash became the 400-meter dash. Thus one can examine the state/conference progressions to determine if (and how long) an athlete held the state/conference record for an event.
CHAMPIONS WHO BROKE NATIONAL H.S. RECORDS
There appears to have been no single official source of national high school records in the early years though newspaper accounts of some early state meets would often claim that a “national scholastic record” was broken or even that a “world’s record” was broken (e.g., Maxson’s 10.2 in the 100-yd dash in 1911-12).
This volume does include a list of Texans who held national high school records according to the National High School Sports Record Book published annually by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). However, it should be noted that other organizations utilize different criteria for national records and thus there is no consensus on “national” records. For example, the NFHS lists the national high school shot put record as 77’ 0” by Michael Carter in 1979 at the Texas state meet though others recognize Carter’s 81’ 3” at the June, 1979, Golden West Invitational in CA. The NFHS recognizes only performances that are part of the regular high school season up to and including the state meet finals. Likewise, the U.I.L. recognizes only performances at the state meet while the NFHS recognizes performances (that meet certain criteria) before the state meet.
Likewise, Henry Neal’s 9.9 100-meter dash in 1990 is recognized by some organizations as the national high school record while the NFHS lists the 100-meter record as 10.14 by Neal in 1979. The 10.14 is a “conversion” of the hand-timed 9.9 to the “automatic” time of 10.14. The U.I.L. also lists the 100-meter record by Neal as 10.14 after adopting the automatic converted time.
