An iceberg or ice mountain is a large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off a glacier or an ice shelf and is floating freely in open water
It may subsequenly become frozen into pack ice(one form of sea ice).
As it drifts into shallower waters ,it may come into contact with the seabed ,
a process referred to as sea bed gouging by ice.About 91% of an iceberg is bellow
the surfase of the water
To be classified as an iceberg ,the height of the ice must be greater than 16 feet above
Sea level and the thickness be 98-164 feet and the must cover an are of at least 5.382
Square feet.
Icebergs are manitored worldwide by the US Nationial Ice Center.NIC prodeces,analyses
And forecasts of Arctic,Antarctic ,Great likes and Chesapeake Bay ice conditions .NIC is the
Only organization that names and tracks all Antarctic icebergs.
