Practical assignments
Exercise 1. Comment on the following terms:
Paradigmatics, paradigm, syntagmatics, syntagma, valency, combinability, distribution.


Exercise 2.
Analyse syntagmatic relations between the elements of the following sentences:
1. In the morning at breakfast, he did not eat and did not sit down (O’Connor).
2. Johnson had put the book down and was sitting there, looking at him slyly (O’Connor).
3. It is very difficult for me to believe you (Mitchell).
4. At the head of the stairway they turned right and entered a garage (Hailey).


Exercise 3.
Give paradigms of the following words:
to bring, to lie, to lay, to rise to raise, long, speaker.


Exercise 4.
Explain on what grounds the following words are grouped together:
a) spoke, wanted, was, cut, built; b) introduced, is introducing, will introduce, has introduced; c) will come, was written, has done, is playing, is being asked, should have been done; d) their, the student’s notebook, notebook of the student.

Morphology as a Part of Grammar
Objectives:

  • to provide feedback on the studied theoretical material by exposing students to commenting on the questions of diverse grammatical intricacies;

  • to teach trainees to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in practice by fostering them to analyze linguistic facts and grammatical phenomena within the limits of the discussed issue.



Questions for discussion:



  1. Morphology and syntax as two parts of grammatical studies of the language structure. The subject-matter of morphology.

  2. The morpheme, its definition, main characteristics and classification. Morphemic structure of the word.

  3. Word as the basic nominative unit of the language, its characteristics.

  4. General characteristics of notional and functional words.
