Strictly speaking it is the second:
Consuming Technologies: Media and Information in
Domestic Spaces,
edited by Roger Silverstone and Eric Hirsch, was published by
Routledge in 1992.

TELEVISION AND A PLACE CALLED HOME
1
‘Home is no longer just one place. It is locations. Home is that place which enables
and promotes varied and everchanging perspectives, a place where one discovers
new ways of seeing reality, frontiers or difference. One confronts and accepts
dispersal and fragmentation as part of the constructions of a new world order that
reveals more fully where we are, who we can become’ (bell hooks, 1991, 149, cited
in Massey, 1992, 15).

Work in family therapy is vulnerable to significant critique of course, not least for its
hypostatisation of the family as a norm. In following some of the arguments of this
literature I do not intend to endorse the judgements of pathology or normality mostly
associated with family therapy literature or to reify the family as a necessary or even
desirable social unit.
3
Ure (1835) describes the newly emerging factory system as a moral economy. Apart
from the discussions that follow in which the term and the idea of an alternative set of
economic values, distinct from those embodied in public and market oriented economics,
is variously discussed, one can also point to the emergence of institutional economics
(Adams, 1980) in which economic theory is grounded in a perception of institutional
specificity.
4
e.g.‘Time orientation may be particularly evident in the kind of economy constructed
for the household; in situations where there is a choice, the balance among savings,
income from investment, and credit may reflect a difference in orientation. A
household economy based substantially on credit may be clearly present-oriented;
savings may reflect a future orientation; income from investments may reflect a
family living on the accumulated wealth of several generations and hence constitute
a strong root in the past’ (Reiss, 1981, 233).
