Feedback is useful on many levels: teachers to students, peers to one another, and  

self-reflection by students.

Teacher feedback highlights  

what is working in a student’s 

writing and provides both 

scaffolding and support for 

aspects of the student’s text or 

process that can be improved.



Peer feedback provides a level 

of support similar to teacher 

feedback, but it also teaches 

students how to read a peer’s 

writing and provide meaningful 

and constructive feedback.



Self assessments allow  

students to view their writing 

from the perspective of the 

reader, helping them to identify 

where they have been successful 

and where they need to rework 

text if others are to understand it.
