“Every street of Kabul is enthralling to the eye
Through the bazaars, caravans of Egypt pass
One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs
And the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls”
From “Kabul”, by Saib Tabrizi
Translated by Josephine Davis
The title of “A Thousand Splendid Suns” comes from a passage in a poem called “Kabul”, written by a 17th c. Persian poet, Saib Tabrizi.
When we think of present-day Afghanistan, we imagine a war-torn nation, but this poem suggests a very different place.
Look at the book jacket through the lens of the poem. What do you think the “thousand splendid suns” of the poem will represent in this novel?
