The Legend of Kirk Kiz

brave Am azonian
fe m a le soldiers. T here w e re m any w om en
in arm ies of d iffe re n t co u ntrie s.
There is a legend of Samarkand A m a
zons too. A ccording to the legend, a
group of girls stayed in the castle of Kirk
Kiz Tepe to p ro te ct Samarkand. Soldiers
from another country wanted to enter
the castle. Samarkand girls, led by their
leader Gauhar defended the castle. Many
days and nights they fo u g h t against enemy
soldiers and killed them on the battlefield.
A lot of girls were killed too. Only Gauhar
and som e girls stayed alive, but help from
the city did not com e. The girls were ready
to pro te ct the city to the death.
The castle w as b u rn in g , crie s w ere
heard in the fire , and the w alls w ere
broken. The g irls lost hope. But G auhar
m anaged to kill som e m ore so ld ie rs w ith
th e arrow s. W hen the a rro w s ended,
G auhar w as hurt.
The enem y so ld ie rs s u rro u n d e d her.
They w e re looking at her bu t cou ld not
co m e nearer. G auhar slow ly stoo d up,
a b lo o d y h e lm e t fell dow n fro m her
head and her long hair fell dow n on her
sho ulde rs. She raised her sw ord and
said: “ My n a m e ’s Gauhar, my girls w ere
killed in the battle, and I call yo u r leader
to fig h t” .
The so ld ie rs w e re su rp rise d . No one
had fo u g h t w ith th e ir po w e rfu l arm y
as bravely as the girls did. The leader
looked at the girl and q u ie tly said: “ I’d
like to have such m en in my a rm y ” .
He p o lite ly cam e up to G auhar and
ca re fu lly looked into her eyes. He realized
th a t he w o uld no t take Sam arkand, but
w ould find his death there.
The le ad er to o k the g irl’s hand and
kissed it. Then he tu rn e d to his men and
sho ute d: “ I saw the pearl o f Sam arkand
and it’s enough fo r me. B ack h o m e !”
The arm y m ou nte d th e ir horses and
rode away.
Brave G auhar fo llo w e d the last so ld ie r
w ith her eyes. A sm ile of jo y lit up her
fa ce w hen th e y d isa p p e a re d over the
horizon, leaving the land o f Sam arkand.
At th a t m om ent, the rid ers appeared,
hurrying to help the Am azons. G auhar
tu rn e d her head and said quietly: “ Fi
n a lly!” and fell fla t on her back. She
was badly w o un de d. C losing her eyes
she re m e m b e re d her parents: how her
