Consumer Protection Law in UK

Consumer protection in the United Kingdom is implemented through numerous laws of Parliament, legal instruments, government agencies, departments and pressure groups from citizens, and aims to ensure that the market economy produces fairness and quality in the goods and services that people buy. The main areas of consumer regulation include, more equitable clauses in contracts for goods and services, by declaring sudden and burdensome clauses as unfair, regulation of product safety, to ensure that people cannot purchase potentially harmful goods, and financial regulation, to ensure access to cheaper credit. People fully understand the obligations they have when taking loans, and the strong competition in the private sector, through the break-up of cartels, the dismantling of monopolies, and the dissolution of some mergers since the United Kingdom, through its membership in the European Union is part of the internal market, it works with European countries Other and European Union institutions for producing and enforcing transnational consumer protection laws (Chen,2020).

Consumer protection issues are dealt with when complaints are filed with the General Manager of Fair Trade. The Office of Fair Trading will then investigate, enforce a court order, or bring the matter to a lawsuit. According to this case, Uber’ consumers cannot file a complaint directly with the International Trade Office. Complaints should be submitted to Consumer Direct who will provide legal advice to complainants, or redirect the individual complaint to Trade Standards for investigation. Due to the restrictions stipulated in the Foundation Law of 2002, individual complainants cannot be informed of whether or not their case is under investigation. In very rare cases, the direct consumer may direct too many complaints to the foreign trade office to be considered a systemic complaint. Consumer groups can also be involved in OFT, such as the statutory Consumer Protection Authority - Focus on the Consumer - via a premium complaint (Chen,2020).
The International Trade Office rarely goes after companies, however, preferring a lighter regulatory approach. Consumer complaints against companies are not published, but investigation, undertakings, and enforcement work are in place. Many consumer protection laws for example the Distance Selling Regulations 2000 or unfair clauses in the Consumer Contracts Act 1997 are in fact UK implementations of EU directives. One of the bodies responsible for enforcing these rules is the International Trade Office. This leads to the problem that these examples of legislation are explicitly designed to deal with individual complaints, but the Office of Free Trade will only deal with systemic complaints and will ignore individual complainants who redirect them to the direct consumer. The Office of Fair Trade also acts as the official watchdog for consumers and competition in the United Kingdom, with a mandate to make markets work well for consumers, and at the local and municipal level through trade standards departments (Chen,2020).
