• The traditional rubber agroforests are complex multi-strata systems important for biodiversity, yet are being destroyed by the intensification of agriculture and other land uses
• Potential to conserve biodiversity within rubber agroforests depends on appropriate innovative interventions, including payment mechanisms.
• The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in partnership with local NGOs WARSI and Gita Buana, implemented an action-research project in Bungo district in Jambi, Sumatra on reward mechanisms for conservation of traditional rubber agroforests.
• Agreements to conserve 2,000 ha of jungle rubber were made with four villages. Rewards in the form of support to establish micro-hydro power generators, local tree nurseries and model village forests were provided.
