• It is estimated that 60 million indigenous people are almost wholly dependent on forests, while 350 million people depend on forests for a high degree for subsistence and income (World Bank 2004).
• The poor rely on forest goods and ecosystem services for a range of basic needs: food, shelter, clothing and heating.
