Using study 
forums 
I challenge you to visit any university campus, anywhere in the 
world and not be able to fnd groups of students huddled together 
chatting about their work. Whether they are in the cofee shop, in 
the library, or even in the student union bar, you are bound to fnd 
small groups of students discussing something about their stud-
ies. It’s a natural occurrence. Students go to lectures and seminars, 
they read part of a textbook, and then they talk to each other. Tey 
might ask questions for clarifcation if they didn’t quite understand 
something. Tey may well be sympathising with one another for 
fnding the textbook hard going. Or they could be talking to each 
other about the forthcoming assignment, looking for ideas and 
tips to help them with their own work. Students inevitably chat 
with each other about their studies. In fact, you will fnd in most 
universities there are several places explicitly designed for the 
purpose. In the entrance to the Business School building where 
I work, there is a small area with comfy chairs and low cofee ta-
bles. Te only function of this space is to allow students to sit and 
chat with one another. Across campus, in one of the lecture room 
buildings, there is a central space with sofas. Before and after lec-
tures, I fnd students sitting there chatting, even though they are
