Coping 
with online 
presentations 
Students are required to give all kinds of presentations during 
their studies. Tese vary from simply talking in a tutorial to pro-
vide an insight into a specifc question right through to formal 
presentations that are assessed as part of their degree. You will be 
expected to present your ideas to class regularly. Inevitably, stu-
dents are wary and often scared of making presentations. Tey are 
not alone. In one study of what people are frightened about, public 
speaking was top of the list. Being scared of dying was third on the 
list. So, people appear to be more scared of giving a presentation 
than meeting their demise. Tis was explored in a book written 
by two friends of mine called 
And Death Came Tird
(Roper and 
Lopata, 2011). It highlighted the need to get to grips with speaking 
in public and eradicating the fear of doing so. Whatever career 
you choose after university, giving presentations is going to play 
an important part. Indeed, the higher up the career ladder you go, 
the more critical presentations become. Tis is one of the reasons 
why universities incorporate presenting within their modules. It is 
a means of preparing you for the world of work. 
However, students frequently fnd presenting in class scary. 
During my time as a lecturer, I have had to encourage, coax, and
