collaboration 
Outside my ofce door, there is a small noticeboard. Every lec-
turer has a similar pinboard by the entrance to their ofce. We 
use it to post relevant information for our students, so each lec-
turer has diferent items according to the various topics they 
teach and their academic speciality. However, there is one thing 
that is standard across all these noticeboards, and it is the notif-
cation of our “ofce hours”. Tese are a couple of hours each week 
when we guarantee we will be in our ofces so that students can 
“drop-in” and ask questions. At other times, students would need 
to make an appointment as we will be lecturing, running tuto-
rials, preparing lectures, or performing admin. Te two hours 
posted on the noticeboards outside our ofces are the guaranteed 
time when we are available just for students. What is interest-
ing about these ofce hours is that students rarely attend alone. 
Usually, a small “delegation” arrives to discuss something that 
I said in a lecture, or to ask about their tutorial work, or perhaps 
to query some aspect of their assignment. Tis posse of students 
will have several questions or will all be seeking clarifcation of an 
aspect of their studies. It is rare for students to turn up to ofce 
hours on their own.
